TRIFLE:
For the want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For the want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For the want of a horse the rider was lost.
For the want of a rider the battle was lost.
For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horse-shoe nail.

Invention: Great discoveries and
improvements invariably involve
the cooperation of many minds. I
may be given credit for having
blazed the trail but when I look

I feel the credit is due to others

Helpful Hints

Amazing Broccoli:

When Grandmother said to eat your
vegetables, she really knew what she
was talking about! Researchers at the
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in
Batimore have isolated what they call
a "Chemoprotectant" for cancer from
a vegetable. (A chemoprotectant is a
substance which gives protection against
disease to those who eat it.)

Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli,
brussels sprouts, and cabbage have long
been felt to offer this protection. Now,
the specific substance in broccoli that
gives protection from cancer has been
identified. It is called sulforaphane.

Researchers say sulforaphane is possibly
the most potent cancer protecting agent
yet discovered! Molecular pharma-
cologist Paul Talalay reported, in the
"Proceedings ot the National Academy
of Sciences", on how the sulforaphane
in broccoli actually stimulates the body's
cells to produce cancer fighting enzymes.

This chemoprotectant remains in broccoli
after careful cooking. Studies have not yet
shown if, or how sulforaphane directly
blocks tumor formation, but researchers
feel the evidence is strong enough to
provide a scientific basis for including
vegetables like broccoli in the diet.

Food: Some people have a foolish
way of not minding, or pretending
not to mind, what they eat. For
my part, I mind my belly very
studiously, and very carefully;
for I look upon it, that he who
does not mind his belly will
hardly mind anything else.

FREE RADICALS: Aging -heart disease-cancer-
cataracts-they are all symptons of the harm done to
the human body by free radicals. These are the
'loose cannons" of the cell world. They damage
chromosomes and are probably responsible
for many of the physical changes associated
with aging.
Each cell in a living body is in a constant state
of change. Molecules in cells generate energy
by absorbing nutrients and excreting wastes,
using oxygen. The process produces"incomplete"
oxygen molecules. These are free radicals. They
bounce around the body, attaching and re-
attaching themselves to one molecule after
another, leaving behind a trail of injured cells.

Sugar: The only sugar that should be
eaten is the raw, brown kind, never the
white, which is without any nutritional
benefits. Regular brown sugar is as
bad and as unnutritious as white: it
is simply refined sugar with some
(processed) molasses replaced.
Consider sugar one of your white enemies; others are salt,
white vinegar, and flour. "Pure white" sugar means that the
food is devoid of the nutritives required by the body, but
high in calories.

Egg shells can be easily removed
from hard-boiled eggs if they are
quickly rinsed in cold water after
they are boiled. Also, add a drop
of food coloring to help tell the
cooked eggs apart from the raw
eggs in your refrigerator.

Quote for Today

When I was very young , I was disgracefully
intolerant but when I passed the thirty mark
I prided myself on having learned the
beautiful lesson that all things were good,
and equally good. That, however, was really
laziness. Now, thank goodness, I've sorted
out what matters and what doesn't. And I'm
beginning to be intolerant again.

Roosevelt Will Ride Again

Gatlinburg, TN plans re-enactment
of former president's arrival to
dedicate Smokies 75 years ago.

People hoping for a modern-day New Deal will
come close at this year's Fourth of July parade in
Gatlinburg. The city is planning a re-enactment of
former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's
ride through the city on his way to dedicate the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park on
Sept 2, 1940. The re-enactment also celebrates
the park's establishment.

"We are trying to tie this in as a salute to the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park's 75th
anniversary." Roosevelt's New Deal created
the park in 1934, and the newly formed Civilian
Conservation Corps began building infrastructure.

On Labor Day in 1940, Roosevelt delivered a
speech in Chattanooga, then drove through
Knoxville on his way to Gatlinburg. He dedicated
the park "with one foot in North Carolina and one
foot in Tennessee when he gave his speech."

Ouote of the day

One of the great liberal documents of the
world is the Declaration of Independence.
One of the great conservative documents
of the world is the Constitution of the
United States. We need both documents
to build a country. One to get it started.
Liberal. And the other to help maintain its
structure over the years. Conservative.

Canned Foods: If the containers of canned
foods are damaged in any way, do not buy
them. Reject those whose sides are dented
(they can absorb the chemicals in metals).
Most important, however, is to reject cans
that swell on the top or bottom. The
swelling indicates contamination.

Monosaturated Fats: are not considered
harmful to your heart, and new research
suggests they may actually reduce your
blood cholesterol level and, thus your risk
of cardiovascular disease. This type of fat
is found in olive oil, and in certain plant
foods including avocados.

Polyunsaturated Fats: also tend to
reduce blood cholesterol levels. It's the
kind of fat you find most typically in
sunflower seeds, corn, and soybean.
